National Monument in the Merdeka Square, right at the heart of Jakarta. It was built in 1961 and finished 10 years later. The National Monument (we call it Monas - short for Monumen Nasional) has become Jakarta's number one landmark. The flame on the top is gold plated. From the observation deck you can take a look at the whole city. The diorama museum in the basement provides you with a glimpse of the journey of Indonesian independence struggle. Monas has been dubbed "Sukarno's (Indonesia's first president) last erection". Other monuments in Jakarta have also acquired descriptive nicknames such as "pizza-man" and "7-Up"
